July 1996

 previous -------------- next

The Fourth of July is a special occasion for Americans, for it is on this date that we celebrate our nation's independence. It is not simply a celebration of freedom from England however, rather it includes the celebration of liberty in general. In this country we experience a level of liberty never before known on the face of this globe. Yet few people realize that the basis of this freedom is found in the Biblical roots of our country's heritage. This is not to say that our founding Fathers were all born-again believers: many of them were not. However, the vast majority did have a deep regard for the Word of God, and they attempted to create a society and government that was based upon its principles. Noah Webster made the following statement:
The moral principles and precepts contained in the Scriptures ought to form the basis of all our civil constitutions and laws. All the miseries and evils which men suffer from vice, crime, ambition, injustice, oppression, slavery, and war, proceed from their despising or neglecting the precepts contained in the Bible.

Daniel Webster added these thoughts:

Our ancestors established their system of government on morality and religious sentiment. Moral habits, they believed, cannot safely be trusted on any other foundation than religious principle, nor any government be secure which is not supported by moral habits.
Listen to the words of Benjamin Franklin. spoken to the Constitutional Convention of 1787:
In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir: were heard and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor... Have we now forgotten this powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred writings that "except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it." I firmly believe this... I therefore beg leave to move that, henceforth, prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberations be held in this assembly every morning.
As we enjoy the festivities this Independence Day, let us take a moment to thank the Lord who has given us this land. May we defend it, and stand for what is right in an age of liberalism, socialism. humanism. and atheism. In closing, let us again hear the words of Noah Webster: "The religion which has introduced civil liberty is the religion of Christ and His apostles... to this we owe our free constitutions of government."
