June 1995

 previous -------------- next

June has arrived! Summer has finally come. For many adults, the prospects of a vacation away from the tedium of the work place is just around the corner. Children are rejoicing for it will be nearly three months before they must once again enter the classroom, But there is one group of people who look upon this time with a mixture of ecstasy and anxiety: the graduates. After thirteen years of toil in school, or four or more years of collegiate work, these individuals have reached their goal. They have graduated, this is surely a thrilling time. Parents and grandparents beam as diplomas are received, degrees are conferred, and tassels are moved. Handshakes and hugs are exchanged, parties are given, gifts are received. But after the celebrations are over, the graduate is left with one important question! What do I do now?

Sometimes we lose sight of what training our young people is all about. They are not being educated simply so that they can receive some certificate. They are being trained to go out and make a successful life. What good does a high school diploma do, if a young person refuses to get a job? What good is a Master's degree if the recipient fails to live a productive life? The fact that a young person has become a graduate of some institution does not ensure future accomplishments. That is why he must ask: What do I do now?

Parents, have we been preparing our children for that day? Are we teaching them not just academic knowledge, but the Biblical wisdom that will enable them to know what to do? A preacher once said, "we have spent much time teaching our children how to make a living, but very little time leaching them how to live." Education does not produce character, Education does not produce initiative. Education does not produce morality and virtue. Education does not produce a godly home and godly children. The only One who can produce these qualities is God, and He will produce them in the lives of those who are committed to the wisdom and practice of Biblical truth. When our children graduate, and ask the question, "What do I do now?", the only answer that will suffice is Proverbs 3:5-6:

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean riot unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."

Your Pastor,
Mark J. Montgomery
