Pastors and Praying Friends,
We are continuing with our language learning here in Bosnia. This
week we learned many new things and here are a few.
- How to make nouns
from verbs and adjectives. We have already been doing this in
our conversations but it was very helpful to learn some of the
basic rules for doing it which will help us make fewer
- "Turcizm u
Bosanskom jesiku." Since Bosnian was controlled by the
Ottoman Empire for several hundred years there are still several
thousand Turkish words used here in Bosnian. It can be confusing
when speaking to people because depending on where they are from
they will use a Turkish word for something instead of the
Bosnian word. For instance:
- Week in Bosnian is
sedmica but in Turcizm it is Hefta.
- Love in Bosnian is
ljubav and in Turcizm it is ašik.
- Friend in Bosnian is
prijatelj but in Turcizm it is ahbab.
- Faith in Bosnian is
vjera but in Turcizm it is din.
- Man in Bosnian is
čovjek but in Turcizm it is insan.
The Lord has blessed us with great teachers and
helpers in the language. Thank you so much for your continued prayers
