Response:
Thank you for your recent letter. Dr.Weeks has passed away, so I will
attempt to answer your question.
You ask concerning his statement that a pastor's wife should be
"quiet,
not boisterous". I looked up "boisterous" in the dictionary, and
found
this definition: "Course. Rough. Strong. Massive. Tumultuously
violent,
furious. Noisy and unrestrained." Now, compare that with what the
Bible
says about the Godly woman. I Timothy 2:9-15 indicate that a woman is
to
be modest (orderly), shamefaced (modest, humble, reverent), sober (of
sound mind, having self-control), learning in silence, (same word as
translated "quiet" in I Peter 3:4), subject (a military term meaning
"to
arrange under), not teaching men, not usurping authority over men (to
usurp means to have dominion, to master, or to govern), and bearing
godly children. I Peter 3:1-6 teaches that the Godly woman will be
chaste, meek (gentle, mild), and quiet. Titus 2:4-5 states that older
women are to teach younger women to be sober, lovers of their
families,
discreet (self-controled), keepers of the home (one who works at
caring
for the home), good, and obedient. It seems that Dr. Week's statement
lines up exactly with what the Bible has to say.
Of course, this does not means that women are not allowed to use
their
intelligence, nor does it mean that a woman is a doormat for her
husband
or any other man to walk on. A Godly woman should be cared for and
loved
sacrificially by her husband. But her place is not to lead him, nor
to
lead other men in a church setting. Her greatest characteristic,
according to I Peter 3:4, is "a meek and quiet spirit, which is in
the
sight of God of great price."
May the Lord bless you as you serve Him.
