| Question:
In Luke 1, when the angel comes to Zacharias and tells him that his
wife will have a baby, he asks in verse 18, "how shall I know this."
Then in the same chapter the angel comes to Mary and told her she would
have a baby, and in verse 34 she asks "how shall this be." My question
is - why was Zacharias punished for unbelief and Mary was not, when
they both asked the angel basically the same question?

Response:
Good question. The answer appears to be, both from the words used and
the response of the angel, that Zacherias was motivated by unbelief,
while Mary was motivated by an interest in how this would be
accomplished. Two different Greek words are used. Zacherias begins his
question with the word "kata", which often carries with it an idea of
opposition, while Mary begins her's with "pros", which does not carry
that idea at all. Zacherias, in his unbelief that the angel he is
talking to has brought him an answer to his prayers, asks for a sign,
and he gets it: he is struck dumb, and quite possibly deaf as well (vs
62). Mary, on the other hand, asks how this miracle that she believes
will happen, and the angel tells her in verse 35.
I guess this would be similar to having a child or student respond to
your instructions by asking "Why?". Some questions are asked because
the child has a genuine desire to receive more knowledge. Other
questions are raised because the child is questioning your authority to
give the directive. The first type of question is answered with more
information and explanation. The second type of question is answered by
discipline.
