| Question:
Is it biblically permissible for a divorced minister to resume a pastorate?
|
|
Response:
No, I do not believe that it is. According to I Timothy 3, a pastor must have certain qualifications. The first two of these are "blameless" and "the husband of one wife". Verse 4 adds, "one who ruleth well his own house." I have taught the Biblical position on divorce and remarriage in other places on this website, so I will not go through it again here. However, since divorce is wrong, and a divorced person is continuing in that state of sin, he is certainly no longer blameless, and he does not have his home under control. If he is remarried, he is no longer the husband of one wife, and is in fact an adulterer (Romans 7:3, Matt 19:9). Therefore, a divorced man should not be in the ministry. If both he and his former wife are still unmarried, he should devote his time to reconciling his marriage. After reconciliation, and when some time for healing and growth has passed, then perhaps he can re-enter the pastorate.
Thanks for asking.
