Today's passage deals with misplaced priorities. Solomon writes that many people have a great desire to have a special relationship with those around them who have power and wealth. Obviously, this is because they assume that friendship with a person of importance will help them to get ahead in this world. If they are a friend of the boss then perhaps they will get a promotion or a raise. If they are close to a celebrity, then perhaps he will invite them to some of his lavish parties and they will get to rub shoulders with other famous people. If they can become friends with a rich man, then perhaps he will help to finance their lives as well as his own. Thus, many folks, including many Christians, will fall all over themselves in an attempt to establish a relationship with, and gain the favor of, societal nobility.
Solomon reminds his son that the One Whom he should want to establish a relationship with is the Lord. At best, an earthly acquaintance can help someone out for a few years, but God is the eternal Judge, and his benefits last forever. In addition, when a man dies he will not stand before other men, regardless of how powerful they may have been, but he will stand before Jesus Christ and give an account of his relationship to Him.
The Lord told us,
"No man can serve two masters" (Matt. 6:24).
We need to decide if we want to be found in favor with "important" people on earth or with the sovereign God of the Universe.
