In Psalm 133:1, David writes and teaches
'Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity."
Across our world we see strife. Whether it be over ethnic issues as in Bosnia, or racial issues as in Los Angeles, or religious issues as in Northern Ireland, fighting and war are a prevalent part of our society. Even in the work place a cut-throat attitude of "me first and who cares about you" can be seen. A day does not pass without a newspaper article concerning violence, assault, and murder.

If there is one place on earth that should be free from these problems, it should be the local fundamental Baptist church. I recently spoke to our teenagers and gave them three New Testament principles which teach the obligation and necessity of unity within the church. The first of these is the Body Principle, which is found in I Cor. 12. Here Paul teaches that as members of the same church we each serve a particular function which is necessary to the well being of the body. The whole body is not made up of one organ. Neither is the church made up of one type of individual. Each organ of the body is needed, and if one part of the body is in opposition to another part, then the body is sick. Thus, no church member should see himself either as unimportant or as all-important. The body must function together as a whole for the good of all the members and to impact the world around it.

The second principle is the Building Principle found in Eph. 4:16. Paul teaches here that as all the different parts of a house must fit together in order to support the structure, so all the parts of the local church must fit together in order to support the work of the ministry. Picture if you can a house of cards, if one card falls, the entire house falls. Thus it is with the church. Each member is supported by others, and in turn supports someone himself. When this happens, the church grows not only larger, but also stronger.

The final principle is found in Philippians 2:1-3. Paul teaches here that if we have been saved by the same grace of God, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and followers of the same Word of God, then we ought to be united. A wise man once said, "If two pianos are in tune with the same tuning fork, then they are in tune with each other." As members of Court Street Baptist Church we have all been saved the same way through the blood of Christ. The same Holy Spirit guides us into all truth. The same Bible teaches us how to live. We are brothers and sisters in Christ, and heirs of the same promises of God. Thus, we should be able to love one another, and work together to serve our Heavenly Father. Sure disagreements will arise. But if we apply the Body Principle, the Building Principle, and the Blood Principle, we can deal with these problems Scripturally, and be stronger in the long run.

May the Lord bless you as you serve Him in the area to which He has called you.

Your Pastor
Mark Montgomery
