Proverbs 14:14

"The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways" - Proverbs 14:14

Today's proverb contains a very important spiritual principle. Solomon opens by referring to "the backslider in heart". The concept that jumps out at me is that a person can be a backslider in his heart. When we normally think of backsliding, we think of someone who's actions are not what they ought to be. If someone isn't faithful to the church, or they are involved in improper behavior, we say that they are backslidden. However, we need to understand that a person's backslidden condition does not begin with his activities, but it begins in his heart.

I believe that there are many Christians who outwardly conform to that which the Bible says, but inwardly they are backslidden. They go to church, but they aren't really interested, they don't pay attention, and their service is minimal. They maintain a moral lifestyle, but their thoughts are filled with lasciviousness. They do what is expected of them, but their spirits really aren't in it, and they would rather do something else. These folks are backslidden in heart, and it is only a matter of time before it becomes evidenced in their lives.

The Bible tells us that "as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Prov. 23:7).
Thus the backslider in heart is truly a backslider in God's eyes, whether anyone else knows it or not. The lesson here is that I need to do some soul-searching and see what it is that I think about, desire, and wish would happen in my life. Do my thoughts revolve around serving God? Do I wish that I didn't have to be in church, or do I dream of participating in un-Scriptural behaviors? Would I be embarrassed if my church family knew what really goes on inside my head? If my answers are not what they should be, then I am backslidden, and I need to repent.

 How is your heart today?
