Today's Pathway:

 Romans 1:16-20
  1. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
  2. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
  3. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
  4. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
  5. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

His Majesty's Service

 A number of years ago I was asked to preach at a conference. I was given a topic to preach on, which was "Where Would I Be Without My Bible." Romans chapters 1 and 2 were the passages that I preached on that day, and I started with the verses above. According to verse 16, it is the Gospel that saves a man's soul. According to verse 17 it is through the Gospel that the righteousness of God is revealed. But according to verse 18 the wrath of God is revealed from Heaven, and according to verses 19 and 20 the reality of the existence and power of God are revealed through creation. So, what does this teach us about man's condition and the importance of the Scriptures?

 According to verse 20, even if a man did not have a Bible he would know that there is a God. When he looks at the world around him, and looks at himself in a mirror, he realizes that these things did not just "happen". Psalm 19:1 states,

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."
Men are not naturally atheists. They have to be indoctrinated into that belief system, because it contradicts everything that they can observe. Even in primitive cultures you find people who are worshiping some form of deity. It may not be the God of the Bible; it may be a multitude of gods, or perhaps forces of nature, or maybe mountains or animals, but there is something that these people worship because they know that there is something or Someone that is more powerful than them, because creation proves it to them.

 According to verse 18, even if a man did not have a Bible he would know that God is angry about sin and punishes it. Again, throughout the world, people have devised religious systems that include some sort of sacrifice to appease the wrath of their god. They know that they are sinners because their conscience tells them so (Romans 2:15). They have seen other people suffer "divine" punishment for their wicked activities. Thus, they know that they must do something to keep their god or gods from punishing them. Maybe they bring food to a temple. Maybe they harm themselves physically. Perhaps they sacrifice an animal, or in some instances one of their own children. They pray, they chant, they practice rituals. They know that their god is angry because of the things that they have done, and they want to pacify him.

 So, both the world around us and our own conscience show us that there is a God and that He punishes sin. Here is what creation and our conscience does NOT tell us: the only way to be reconciled to God. According to verses 16 and 17 that message is found in the Gospel, and the Gospel is found in the Scriptures. So, where would I be without my Bible? I would know that there is God Who created me and to Whom I am accountable Who is angry about my sin. But I wouldn't know how to be saved. This is why it is imperative that we take the Bible, which contains the Gospel message, to the world.
