In Philippians 3:10, Paul wrote that one of the goals of his life was "That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection." What does the resurrection of our Lord mean to us really? What power does it have? Is it simply a historical event which gives us an opportunity once a year to put on a new spring outfit, hide candy and eggs for our children, and fulfill our yearly obligation to attend church? Or is there more to it.

Paul says that there is power in the resurrection. First of all there is sovereign power. Who but the Almighty God, the Creator of the Universe, could raise Himself from the dead? This was no ordinary man. That is why so many rumors have been given claiming that the body was stolen, or that Christ never really died in the first place. To accept the historical fact of the resurrection is to accept that Jesus was, in fact, who He claimed to be: the Very Son of God. There is also saving power in the resurrection. As Christ through His sacrifice on Calvary and His resurrection conquered death, Hell and Satan, so those of us who accept His sacrifice for our sins and claim Him as our Saviour can be delivered from spiritual death into everlasting life. We know that as Christ rose from the dead, so we who believe shall someday rise to be with Him forever.

We see also sustaining power in the resurrection. If Christ is able to defeat death and corruption, then surely He is able to defeat any problems which come in my life. Why then, should I faint in my service for the Lord. And lastly, the resurrection provides sanctifying power. Paul said "I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." As Christ was crucified, yet rose to live again, so I at salvation crucified the old man, and began to walk in newness of life. As I daily give my life to the Lord and allow His will to be done, I will walk in the path that He desires for me and will live a life that pleases Him. This Easter I have one question: Do you know Him? Have you seen Christ as the Sovereign of the Universe? Have you accepted Him as your Saviour? As a Christian, are you walking as He would have you to walk? If not, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ has the power to meet your need.
