February 1993

"Oh love of God, How rich and pure, How measureless and strong! It shall forever more endure; The saint's and angel's song."
As we enter into the month of February, it is only appropriate that as our thoughts turn to love, we take some time to reflect upon the greatest love ever: the love of God.
The love of God is shown in many ways. It is manifested first of all in the glories of creation. Why did God give us such a beautiful world to inhabit? Because He loves us. Why did He create so vast a universe to behold? Why the beauty of the seasons, and the glories of nature? Because of His great love. It is shown in the marvelous gifts which He gives to us. The Psalmist writes that He "daily loadeth us with benefits." He gives to us family to love, and friends to lean upon. He gives us food and shelter, and all those items which make this life enjoyable. Above all, it is shown through His grace and mercy in salvation. Christ told His disciples, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend." He showed this love when He willingly shed His blood on the cross of Calvary so that undeserving mankind might be reconciled to God through repentance and faith. Then, having provided eternal life, He gives us the Holy Spirit to lead, comfort, and convict us. Truly, God has an unfailing love for us. The song writer put it this way:
Could we with ink the ocean fill
And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky.
This February, and throughout the year, let's remember to "love Him, because He first loved us."
