On July 4th, we will be celebrating our nation's 215th birthday. Amid all the extravaganza and fireworks of the world's biggest birthday party, let us as Americans not lose sight of what it is that we are celebrating. God has been good to these United States. Since the founding of the Plymouth Plantation by the Pilgrims, this land has stood for the freedom to worship God apart from the regulation and persecution of government. When we as a nation lose sight of our responsibility to God, then we are doomed to fall. The 19th century French philosopher, Alex DeTocqueville, put it this way when he said: "America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."
In recent years we have certainly seen a nationwide movement away from God. Drugs and alcohol destroy the mind, while pornography, homosexuality, and the "if it feels good, do it" philosophy destroy the morals. The public school's religion of Humanism attempts to dethrone God and exalt man to the level of deity. This in turn produces young people whose battle cry of "you can't tell me what to do" echoes in the ears of parents, pastors, and public officials.
What can be done to restore America to it's original condition? God appeared to Solomon one night, and gave him the answer by saying:
"If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" II Chronicles 7:14
If we who know and love the Lord will confess our sins, and draw nigh unto God, then He will hear, and He will forgive, and He will empower Christians to serve Him. As we celebrate America's birthday, let us pray that God will once again cause His face to shine upon our nation.
